Those movies know how to make their fights feel genuinely dangerous and painful. Sub-Zero actor Joe Taslim is one of the stars of The Raid and plays lead in the absolutely gruesome The Night Comes For Us, two of the best action movies of the decade. When the fighting happens, as with the acting, it's competent, but that still ends up being a bit of a letdown. If you don't enjoy Kano's swagger, you'll at least get a kick out of Mortal Kombat's actors finding moments to drop series lines like "flawless victory" and "get over here!" which are exactly as dumb as you'd expect in a movie that otherwise tries to play it straight. He keeps the first half of the film fun and breezy in between fight scenes. Actor Josh Lawson plays up Kano's brash, obnoxious asshole persona so well he makes everyone else look flat by comparison. Kano is the reason I laughed with Mortal Kombat more than I laughed at it. I appreciate that it wastes little time, not unlike the story modes of the last few games. After the first half hour, which eases Cole and other Earthrealm normies Jax, Sonya and Kano into the wider world of Mortal Kombat's magic and monsters, the sketch of a plot pretty much just jumps from one excuse for a fight to the next. Still, thin as they are, there's a real pleasure in seeing characters I've known for 20-plus years put on screen and acted competently, even when what's happening doesn't make much sense. It's only been a couple hours and I've already forgotten their names. In a better action movie, Cole's family would have enough screen time for us to get to know and care about them, but here they exist purely as motivation fodder. (I could've told you that and saved you the training montage, Cole!) That justification is fine, but as with most of its other characters, Mortal Kombat's script is doing only the bare minimum to make its fighters feel like people instead of stuntmen. Generally speaking, the fighting feels a bit slower than usual, encouraging players to interact with their surroundings and try new attacks.Mortal Kombat relies on the usual character beats you expect from an unlikely hero story: Cole struggles to unleash his true fighting potential until he finally realizes that the key all along was his love for his family. Every fighter now has three variations to choose from, each one providing different moves and strategies. Players can also interact with the stage and objects in it, jumping off pieces of debris and using scattered items as weaponry. The energy bar returns, allowing players to execute powered-up special attacks and gory moves called X-Rays depending on how much energy they have. In this first-person mode, you'll explore a dark and creepy graveyard, breaking open gravestones to access new finishing moves, costumes, and concept art.Ī lot of changes have been made to the main fighting mechanics, including both new features and some changes made in Mortal Kombat 9. As you fight in various modes you'll earn currency that can be spent in the Krypt, an extra mode wherein players can unlock various collectible goodies. In addition to the aforementioned story mode, Mortal Kombat X contains a plethora of other game options, including challenge towers, a fleshed-out faction system, and competitive online multiplayer. Many aspects of Mortal Kombat X remain the same as always: two characters face off in a fight to the death, utilizing special moves and swift attacks to gain victory. As these characters attempt to resolve an ongoing war in the realm of Outworld, old enemies conspire to reignite the war of years past. The story further jumps ahead by several decades, resulting in a new cast of young characters. After seeing their dead friends revived with dark magic, a team of classic Mortal Kombat characters team up to stop Shinnok. In an effort to avenge his death and take advantage of the supposed peace in Earthrealm, the evil sorcerer Shinnok and his army of minions attack, spurring on an epic war. The story is a direct continuation of Mortal Kombat 9, taking place two years after the death of the evil Shao Kahn. Like Mortal Kombat 9, Mortal Kombat X contains a multi-chapter story mode containing dozens of fun fights. |
